Module One

Task one:- Use Telnet to access Deakin library catalogue and download details of booksearch:

This was a simple exercise using the Microsoft "telnet client" and a freeware called "Kevterm". Both produced the same results as above. I had to input the hostname which is the IP address of the computer I wanted to connect to (Deakin library) which then displays the catalogue search screen.

Using the telnet method to access data bases or networks where the user is a recognised client allows this program to work effectively in its search task. Its purpose was to collect and display information about books by an author and could have supplied information searched by title, subject, key words or a variety of other criteria.

The display format is dated because of the DOS window and when compared to the internet search engines, is difficult to read.

However, the system seems to operate reliably for the purpose it was designed for and in some circumstances, might be preferred to the multitude of site options that would be displayed by the Internet.
